What Are Veneers?

Woman smiling

Veneers are thin shells made of porcelain or composite resin that are placed over the front of a tooth to cover imperfections. Dr. Nick offers traditional porcelain veneers as well as minimal-prep veneers to patients of our Columbia-area dental practice.

It's important to understand that veneers do not actually repair dental flaws. However, they are an excellent dentistry option for patients who have healthy teeth but who wish simply to conceal cosmetic imperfections. In just two visits to our inviting office, patients can completely transform their smiles.

Dental veneers can improve the appearance of teeth that are:

  • Chipped
  • Cracked
  • Stained
  • Gapped
  • Misshapen
  • Misaligned

Perfect the Frame of Your Smile

Even the most beautiful veneers deserve a balanced backdrop. If you have a “gummy” smile or uneven gumlines, gum contouring can gently reshape your tissue for a more symmetrical, refined look.

Often performed alongside veneer placement, this quick cosmetic enhancement allows Dr. Nick to reveal more of your natural tooth structure. The procedure is a trusted way to create cleaner lines, better proportions, and a smile that truly shines.

Porcelain Veneer Treatment Is Easy

As with all of his dental procedures, Dr. Nick strives to make the placement of porcelain veneers as convenient and comfortable as possible. Patients seeking an especially brilliant smile may want to consider whitening treatment prior to veneer placement.

Dr. Nick is able to adjust each veneer with exceptional precision, creating a natural, beautiful smile.

Treatment usually takes two appointments. The first visit to our Columbia office begins with a consultation and thorough oral examination to determine if dental veneers are the best treatment option for your goals.

If you and Dr. Nick decide veneers are right for your smile, treatment will start with your dentist removing a thin layer of dental enamel from each tooth receiving a veneer. This will allow your veneers to sit flush with your natural teeth and blend in with your smile.

Dr. Nick will next take a detailed impression of your teeth and use computer technology to create an accurate picture of the area. These impressions are sent to our off-site partner lab. Dr. Nick has partnered with master ceramist Dr. Wayne Payne, who custom-creates outstanding, beautiful restorations for our practice.

Dr. Nick will place temporary veneers to protect your natural teeth while your custom veneers are being crafted.
After your custom veneers have been created, Dr. Nick will call you in for a second appointment. Dr. Nick will remove your temporary veneers and check the fit and appearance of each custom-made porcelain shell. As a skilled cosmetic dentist, he is able to adjust each veneer with exceptional precision, creating a natural, beautiful smile for you.
Once you and Dr. Nick are satisfied with the appearance of your new veneers, Dr. Nick will bond them to your teeth. Your stunning new smile will be ready to show off!

FAQ About Veneers

Does veneer placement hurt?

No. The great thing about veneers is that they are virtually painless. Only a small amount of enamel is removed for traditional veneers. If you have sensitive teeth, Dr. Pournaras can administer a local anesthetic to ensure you are completely comfortable during treatment. However, most patients do not experience discomfort during veneer placement.

Are veneers permanent?

Because traditional veneers require that the doctor remove some enamel, they are considered permanent and you will always need a restoration on the treated tooth. However, it is important to remember that the porcelain will wear over time and will eventually need to be replaced. If you maintain good oral hygiene, brush and floss regularly, and follow other instructions for proper care, your veneers can last for up to 15 years or more.

Is there a limit to how many veneers I can get?

As long as your teeth are healthy and have sufficient enamel, they can be treated. However, keep in mind that veneers are designed for front teeth. If you have molars that are damaged, dental crowns are often a great option to restore both the appearance and function of those teeth.

I have oral health issues and have been told I don't qualify for veneers. Can you help?

Yes! We offer a wide range of treatment options to help you achieve a healthy foundation in order to qualify for veneers. Our practice areas include general, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry. Get the care you need at our convenient location in Columbia, SC.

Can you replace old or worn veneers?

Yes. During your consultation, your dentist will examine your teeth and determine if a veneer replacement or alternative is best for you.

Why doesn't dental insurance typically cover veneers?

Porcelain veneers are considered a cosmetic procedure. Most dental insurance plans and providers will not cover these types of treatments. If your concerns impact your oral health and function, other treatments may be a viable option and may be covered under your dental insurance plan.
